The Location of the Shire, the Principality, the Kingdom, and our place in the Known World
As Well As Meetings, Activities, and the Places to See and Speak With Us
The Shire of Smythkepe is located in the
Kingdom of Meridies, one of many kingdoms in the SCA. It contains most of Arkansas, and part or all of Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, the northern part of Florida, Tennessee, and Virginia, all of which is part of the
Society for Creative Anachronism, Incorporated, which is international, extending throughout the United States, as well as Canada, Australia, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Panama, Europe, Africa, the Middle East,
and even aboard some naval vessels,
which to most other people has a strong resemblance to Fort Smith, Arkansas, along the western edge of the state (south of I-40 - take the I-540 exit south), in the United States of America.
Fighter practice usually is held on Sunday afternoons somewhere in Creekmore Park, weather (heat and humidity!) and other factors permitting. Approximately 4 p.m. to whenever, but that's flexible. We hold practice in the park to allow you to approach us, meet us, ask questions, enjoy a taste of our activities!

While we encourage period garb, it is not required at public meetings, only at events where we charge for attending. Visitors are welcome to observe and ask questions. |
Another way to keep up with events in Smythkepe is to join our email newsletter list:
Check for the latest news at the Smythkepe Tavern
Non-members please note: attendees at our Events with paid admission are required to wear period clothing (or a reasonable attempt at it) and respect the nature of the event. We are trying to recreate the atmosphere of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. There is usually a small fee for such events (see the advertisement for that event), and certain activities must be restricted to paid members for insurance reasons. Non-members are welcome to come, in period clothing, and "try out" a Society event for a day (for a one-day fee) or for the weekend, paying posted fees -- renting sites, providing food, and all the other details does cost money.
(other organizations' events which we attend under their auspices and conditions; garb is not required!):
Would you like us to do an entertaining and educational demonstration for your classroom, school, Scout troop, or other group or business event?
This can vary from a single speaker (in period costume!) to whoever is available on a given date, with a number of possible activities demonstrated (and sometimes you participate!).
We can be contacted by
U.S. mail at P.O. Box 5505, Fort Smith, AR
72913-5505, or check our Who page.
You may also get in touch with us through any member, including during our fighter practices (usually held on Sunday afternoons somewhere in Creekmore Park in Fort Smith).
Please remember, however - we do not do this for a living (we do not normally charge any fee), and the persons available at any given time may vary.
Official Events require us to pay for a number of expenses; the Shire may make or lose some money on these events. Therefore, a small admission price is usually charged, based on the type of event, the site rental, activities and food available, and the time attended.
Our famous annual event, now in planning for fall, 2003.
The Kingdom of Meridies calendar is available on that web site for events throughout the kingdom. The Principality of Gleann Abhann calendar is available on that web site, or by subscribing to the Principality newsletter, the Ambassador, at http://www.gleannabhann.org/ambassador/index.html Please check the Kingdom and Principality Calendars for the latest information. Other kingdoms' calendars may be viewed through the links at the Society for Creative Anachronism Home Page.
Some additional activities may be available through our Additional Links Page.
