(which to other people appears to be Fort Smith, Arkansas, along the western edge of the state, in the United States of America).

The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), is an non-profit, educational, international organization dedicated to researching and recreating pre-17th-century European history (roughly 600 to 1600 A.D.).

We hold tourneys with armored fighting & battles, candlelit feasts with dancing in the style of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, recreate the clothing, activities and crafts, and encourage the study and appreciation of this fascinating period of human history.

The Society does not promote or endorse any religious, political, or social agenda or belief. While we are not, and have no connection with, any role-playing game, we often create personas for ourselves, and assume a realistic character to enhance the feeling of living in history during our activities. Everyone is addressed as Lord or Lady as a courtesy, but actual ranks and titles within the Society are earned.
The Society is divided into Kingdoms, much as medieval and Renaissance societies were. Within Kingdoms, which may cover all or portions of several modern states/provinces/countries, are subgroups such as Principalities (Kingdoms-in-the-making), Baronies, Shires, and similar groups. A Shire is the smallest autonomous group dealing directly with the upper levels.

We are happy to arrange demonstrations of our activities, arts, and crafts, and provide an education in living history for schools, libraries, Scouts, and other groups, usually at no charge for non-profit groups. Other groups may discuss arrangements.

Members and chapters of the Society may work with other organizations in the production and operation of some of the Renaissance Fairs and similar activities around the country. These are not official activities of the Society, however. There are also other organizations interested in aspects of the same period of history.

Those who are "just curious" may ask to observe in some cases. You can join through us or your local chapter. Paid membership at various price levels provides additional benefits and privileges. Membership is recognized throughout the Society, but specific local rules may apply to certain activities such as combat.

The Society does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, creed, politics or religion.
